What does John cover in Modern Hunting Optics?
A few people have asked why I haven’t written an “updated” optics book. Well, it’s because Modern Hunting Optics isn’t “out of date.” It was not written as a catalog/evaluation of every hunting optic available at the time, because such a book would be obsolete within a year or two, so would need to be updated frequently. Which is why I’ve turned down publishers who asked me to write such books.
FYI: Modern Hunting Optics is indeed a printed book. The ‘Print PDF’ note/link below refers to John’s test chart. In Modern Hunting Optics, he describes how to evaluate your optics using the chart, so go ahead and print it out after you’ve ordered the book itself.
Instead MHO explains the principles of optics and mechanics of rifle and spotting scopes, binoculars, and laser rangefinders—and how to evaluate them yourself, then use them in the field. None of that has changed.
- Hunting with a Spotting Scope
- Hunting Binoculars
- Testing Binoculars
- Testing Scopes
- Scope Adjustments
- Advanced Scope Mounting Techniques & Tools
- Reticle Placement & Parallax
- Reticles & Turrets
- And much much more
